What to see in Bilbao: walking tour of the Old Town

What to see in Bilbao: the Guggenheim Museum on the banks of the estuary

Are you looking for what to see in Bilbao Or would you rather discover it on foot, from the Old Town to the estuary? Bilbao is the story of a reinvention: a medieval merchant town that became an industrial powerhouse and then a cultural icon, without losing its character. On this walking route we look back at the stops that tell that transformation — and if you fancy exploring them by playing, the escape room in Bilbao Escapeo's «The Changing City» turns the walk into an adventure through these very settings.

It is not a guided tour. Nor is it a classic escape room. It is the city transformed into a game board.

What to see in Bilbao: the essential stops on the tour

From the San Antón Bridge to the Guggenheim, the route links the traditional Bilbao with the one that reinvented itself along the estuary.

The Old Town and the Seven Streets

The medieval heart of the town: the original Seven Streets, the Cathedral of Santiago hidden among them, and the Plaza Nueva, the neoclassical courtyard where the pintxo is a religion. A stone's throw away, the Mercado de la Ribera —one of the largest covered markets in Europe— still looks out over the estuary just as it did when the whole of Bilbao lived off it.

The estuary and the San Antón Bridge

The estuary is the backbone of Bilbao: through it came trade, iron and prosperity. The San Antón Bridge, together with its church, is so essential to the town's identity that it appears on its coat of arms. Walking the riverbank is like reading the city's biography layer by layer.

From the Arenal to the Guggenheim

Arenal boulevard, presided over by the Arriaga Theatre, opens the way towards contemporary Bilbao: Frank Gehry's titanium Guggenheim, guarded by Puppy, Jeff Koons' floral dog. It is the symbol of the metamorphosis that gives the experience its name: the changing city.

«The changing city»: the route turned into a game

«The changing city is a self-guided urban game played on your mobile phone while exploring the centre of Bilbao. Accompanied by Kei, a virtual guide who takes you from point to point, you will have to observe historic buildings, decipher symbols, solve riddles and find hidden clues in the city's architecture and heritage.

The tour starts at the San Antón Bridge and passes through ten iconic locations, finishing at the Guggenheim Museum.

An original plan in Bilbao to do as a couple, with friends or as a family

One of the advantages of this way of visiting the city is that it suits almost any plan:

  • A different thing to do as a couple
  • Something original to do with friends in Bilbao
  • A family cultural experience
  • Something a bit different during a getaway to the Basque Country
  • A surprise gift for someone special
  • An alternative to traditional Old Town tours

No prior escape room experience is needed. Just a desire to explore.

How the experience works

It is designed to be simple and flexible: you only need a mobile phone with an internet connection, pen and paper, comfortable footwear and to be in Bilbao to start playing. The game works via geolocation — the challenges unlock upon reaching each point — and does not require downloading any app.

You can play solo or in a group: if you play as a team, you synchronise your devices at the start, all actions count towards the total, and upon finishing you can compare your score with other teams on the leaderboard. After purchase you receive an access code to start whenever you like: the voucher does not expire.

How long is the tour

The average duration is 1.5 to 2 hours, although you can complete it more quickly or at a more leisurely pace: there is no strict time limit. You can stop for a pintxo in Plaza Nueva, take photos or rest and continue afterwards. It fits perfectly into a day of sightseeing in Bilbao.

A different alternative to guided tours and free tours

Classic routes through the Casco Viejo and free tours are a good option for getting to know Bilbao, but they do not always allow you to interact with the surroundings. Here it is the other way around: you set the pace, you solve the puzzles and you construct your own interpretation of the city as you go.

A different way of looking at Bilbao

Many people believe they already know Bilbao. Until they start playing. «The changing city» is an invitation to view the town with fresh eyes: to understand how the memory of what it once was coexists with its commercial identity, its connection to the estuary and a very distinct way of reinventing itself.

If you want to experience the complete route as an adventure, reserve your place in the escape room in Bilbao: The changing city.
