What to see in central Madrid: a one-day walking route

People playing with Escapeo in Puerta del Sol, Madrid

Are you looking for what to see in central Madrid in one day and prefer to move at your own pace, without megaphones or groups? The heart of the capital can be explored perfectly on foot: from the Puerta del Sol to the Royal Palace is barely a kilometre and, in between, centuries of history condensed into squares, markets and narrow streets. On this route we tell you about the essential stops and their lesser-known stories — and if you want to explore it while playing, the escape room in Madrid Escapeo's «Las miradas escondidas» turns the walk into a clue-hunting game through these very settings.

What to see in central Madrid: the stops on the route

The classic itinerary links the three great landmarks of Habsburg Madrid, with detours that are well worth the monuments themselves.

Puerta del Sol, the starting point

It all starts where every road in the country starts: at Kilometer Zero, the plaque marking the radial centre of Spain. Just a few metres away is the clock on the Casa de Correos —the one that chimes on New Year's Eve— and the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, the symbol of the city and a meeting point for generations of Madleñians. The square is full of details that almost nobody looks at twice: take a look at the facades, the old signs, and what the buildings tell you above the shops.

Plaza Mayor, the grand salon of Madrid

A five-minute walk away, the Plaza Mayor awaits you, the stage of Madrid life for four centuries: it has been a market, a bullring, a theatre for royal proclamations and even autos-da-fé. The frescoes of the Casa de la Panadería preside over a colonnaded rectangle that is today one of the most photographed places in Spain. The challenge lies in looking at it slowly: every arch, every lamppost and every corner holds a different layer of history.

Royal Palace and surroundings

The final stretch leads to the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in Europe, with the Almudena Cathedral opposite and the elegant Plaza de Oriente as its prelude. It is the most monumental area of the route and also the most photogenic at sunset, when the white stone of the palace glows in the fading light.

A different way to do the route: playing

You can visit these stops at your own pace… or turn the itinerary into an adventure. «Hidden Gazes – Madrid» is an outdoor gamified experience: a self-guided route with puzzles and trivia through the heart of the city, with no rooms and no clocks. Your guide is Kei, a virtual character who accompanies you through her travel journal, revealing stories, secrets and challenges at every stop.

Kei will offer you observation challenges, hidden clues and small tasks that will activate your wit: the same old city, seen like never before. It is a perfect alternative to the conventional free tour for those who prefer to discover while playing.

How the self-guided tour works

  1. Buy your experience.
  2. Get the instructions instantly by email.
  3. You only need a mobile phone with a connection, a desire to explore and active curiosity.
  4. There are no timetables or groups: you decide when to start and who to play with.

No booking in advance and not relying on anyone: a spontaneous plan, ideal if you're deciding what to do in Madrid on the fly.

Where to stop to eat along the route

Halfway along the route, the Mercado de San Miguel — a 1916 iron and glass jewel next to the Plaza Mayor — is the perfect gastronomic stop for tapas without a sit-down meal. And if you prefer a traditional tavern, head over to La Latina: at Casa Revuelta the battered cod is local religion. Eating is also a way of discovering Madrid, and the game is unhurried: you take a break and continue.
