What to see in Vitoria-Gasteiz: route through the Medieval Almond

What to see in Vitoria-Gasteiz: the Cathedral of María Inmaculada surrounded by parks

Are you looking for what to see in Vitoria-Gasteiz or do you prefer to discover it at your own pace, paying attention to the details? Vitoria's historic quarter —the Almendra (Almond), so called because of the shape of its medieval layout— extends over a hill dominated by the Cathedral of Santa María and is one of the best preserved in the north. On this walking route we review its essential stops — and if you fancy exploring them while playing, the escape room in Vitoria-Gasteiz Escapeo's «The Almond Oath» turns the walk into an adventure through these very settings.

It's not a guided tour. Nor is it a traditional escape room. It's an interactive trail that combines tourism, observation and puzzles.

What to see in Vitoria-Gasteiz: the essential stops

The route allows you to discover both the medieval city and the spaces that connect the historic quarter with modern Vitoria-Gasteiz:

  • White Virgin Square
  • Machete Square
  • Los Arquillos
  • Plaza de España
  • Burullería Square
  • St Mary's Cathedral
  • Medieval wall
  • Bendaña Palace
  • Florida Park
  • Cathedral of Mary Immaculate

Plaza del Machete, Los Arquillos, Santa María Cathedral and the central squares are among the highlights of the city's official tourist routes. Near the cathedral, remains of the old medieval wall can also be found. Facades, sculptures, coat of arms and architectural elements that usually go unnoticed take centre stage here — and, if you play, become clues.

«The Almendra Oath: the route turned into a game

«The Almond Oath» is a self-guided experience played on your mobile phone while exploring the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The city holds memories that are not always easy to hear: Kei, your virtual guide, has sensed something strange among its streets — ancient stories, promises and secrets seem to have awakened within the medieval Almond.

During the tour you will have to observe monuments, interpret symbols, solve riddles and find hidden clues in the heritage. Each challenge unlocks automatically upon reaching the indicated point. The adventure begins in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and continues through various corners of the historic quarter and the centre.

How it works

A tour of the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz

The route is approximately 3 kilometres long and is designed to be done on foot. It begins in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and crosses the medieval old town, whose streets retain the almond-shaped layout that has characterised this part of the city for centuries.

Between one point and the next you will find short routes, generally between two and eight minutes' walk, which allows you to combine moments of play with a leisurely stroll through the historical centre. It is not about arriving as quickly as possible: the key is to look closely.

A different alternative to guided tours and free tours

Many people discover Vitoria-Gasteiz by following traditional tourist routes or guided tours of the historic quarter. These are good options for getting to know the city's history, but they do not always allow you to interact directly with the surroundings. Here, it is the other way around: you decide the pace, look for the clues and solve the riddles while building your own adventure.

Every square is no longer just a tourist stop. Every monument may hold an answer. And any detail could turn out to be important for continuing.

A different way to look at Vitoria-Gasteiz

Many people believe they already know a city until they start playing in it. «The Almond Oath» is not just a tour of the historic quarter: it is an invitation to look at Vitoria-Gasteiz with different eyes — to discover what its squares hide and to understand why its medieval centre is shaped like an almond.

Kei will accompany you along the way, but it is you who must listen to the city's heartbeat and solve the mystery. Are you ready? Book your place at the escape room in Vitoria-Gasteiz: The Almond’s Oath.
