Things to do in Malaga: a walking tour of the historic centre

What to see in Málaga: panoramic view of the historic centre with the Cathedral and the port

Are you looking for what to do in Málaga beyond the conventional sightseeing tour? The city is best enjoyed on foot: its historic centre is compact, bright and full of layers — Roman, Arabic, Renaissance and Mediterranean all at once. On this walking route we suggest exploring it while discovering its monuments and hidden stories… and, if you fancy turning the walk into a game, doing so by solving riddles with the escape room Málaga Escape room: «The Doors of Time».

It is neither a guided tour nor a classic indoor escape room. It is an interactive city adventure: Malaga becomes a book full of secrets and you decide the pace at which you turn its pages.

What to see in Málaga on a walking tour of the centre

From the Atarazanas Market to La Farola, from the Roman Theatre to the Palmeral de las Sorpresas, every corner of the centre holds a different story. In a single walk you can cross two thousand years: the Roman footprint of the theatre, the Alcazaba watching from its hill, the Cathedral —the «Manquita»— with its unfinished tower, the Plaza de la Constitución acting as an urban lounge and the port opening out to the Mediterranean.

Stories hidden in facades, architectural details that usually go unnoticed, symbols that almost nobody looks at twice. That is the raw material of this tour: learning to observe the city, not just to photograph it.

Things to do in Málaga: an original plan for couples, friends, or family

An adventurous route fits almost any plan. It is an ideal activity if you are looking for:

  • A different thing to do as a couple
  • Something original to do with friends in Malaga
  • A family cultural experience
  • A different kind of activity during a trip to Andalusia
  • A surprise gift for someone special
  • An alternative to traditional tours of the historic centre

No prior escape room experience is needed. Just a desire to explore.

«The Doors of Time»: the route turned into a game

«The Doors of Time is a self-guided experience played on your mobile phone while exploring Malaga. Kei, your virtual guide, has found an old book with scrambled pages, each holding a different era of the city. During the tour, you will need to observe historic buildings, decipher symbols and solve puzzles to put the pages back in order.

The tour starts in the Plaza de Félix Sáenz and passes through ten iconic locations in the centre —Atarazanas, the Plaza de la Constitución, the Cathedral and more— before finishing at La Farola, next to the Mediterranean.

How the experience works

It is designed to be simple and flexible. You only need a mobile phone with an internet connection, pen and paper, comfortable footwear and to be in Malaga to start playing.

The game works via geolocation: the challenges are unlocked upon reaching each point along the route, without downloading any application. You can play solo or in a group — if you play as a team, you synchronise your devices at the start, all actions count towards the total and upon finishing you can compare your score with that of other teams. After purchase you receive an access code to start whenever you want: the voucher does not expire.

A different alternative to guided tours and free tours

Classic routes and free tours are a good option for getting to know Málaga, but they do not always allow you to interact with the surroundings. Here it is the other way around: you set the pace, you solve the puzzles and you construct your own interpretation of the city as you go.

A different way of looking at Málaga

Many people believe they already know Málaga. Until they start playing. Understanding what the entrance to the Atarazanas Market hides, why the Cathedral was left unfinished, or what stories the port promenade holds changes the way you walk the city.

If you want to experience the complete route as an adventure, reserve your place in the escape room Málaga: The Doors of Time.
